I know nothing about art, but I needed to stare at screens less, so I figured: Why not grab some coloring books and a set of good ol’ Crayola colored pencils?
Oops. Fell down a kobold hole.
Suddenly, regular Crayola pencils weren’t enough—I needed something shinier, something better! That’s how I ended up with the Castle Arts Woodless Watercolor Pencils… and that’s when I discovered Drawcolorpainting—a little bit of drawing, a little bit of coloring, and a little bit of painting, all mixed together thanks to my watercolor pencils! I still have no idea what I’m doing, but when I made this, I had an absolute blast.
This is a campsite in Northern Ontario, a place where me and two of my best Kobold buddies used to camp. I painted it entirely from memory, and somehow… it still feels right. My friends recognized it immediately, and that alone made this little experiment completely worth it.
After my Drawcolorpainting adventure with the Woodless Watercolor Pencils, I still had a hoard of coloring books waiting for attention. That meant I needed some good colored pencils—so I picked up the Faber-Castell Red Box 60-pack and got to work.
This piece is from Dragon Dreams by R.J. Hampson, and it was the perfect way to jump back into coloring after years away. The Faber-Castell pencils felt great to use—way smoother than I expected! They actually covered a lot better than it looks in the picture. My phone’s AI compression nonsense added some weird grainy texture to the image, but trust me—these pencils performed way better than it appears here.
I had a blast bringing this scene to life, and now I want to see what other treasures I can color next!
This piece is from Fantasy Tiny Homes by R.J. Hampson, and I colored it using my trusty Faber-Castell Red Box 60 set—but for the sky, I switched things up with my Castle Arts Woodless Watercolor Pencils.
Let me tell you, watercolor on coloring book paper is an adventure all on its own. This paper wasn't made for water, and it definitely let me know, but I had a blast experimenting anyway.
I’ve always loved islands, water, and nature, so this one was especially fun to bring to life. Now I just need to figure out how to move in!
